THE COMMODITY
II.What Tropical spices is, and what H-α does with it

The tropical spice complex — black and white pepper, vanilla, cloves, nutmeg and mace, cinnamon and cassia, ginger — is a set of separate markets with very different supply structures. Vietnam and Brazil carry pepper, Madagascar and Indonesia vanilla, Indonesia and Tanzania cloves, Sri Lanka true cinnamon against Chinese and Vietnamese cassia. Grade turns on bulk density and piperine for pepper, on vanillin and moisture for vanilla, and several of these lines are narrow enough that a single crop failure resets the price level for years.

What the subscription does with it

The subscription reads the declared record on each spice's own HS heading, keeps growers' cooperatives, exporters, processors and importers in one book with the role stamped on each row, and states the price basis as the registry defines it. On a line with no free published price the report says so and publishes no mark rather than deriving one from a neighbouring spice.

The registry’s note on the headings this subscription reads:
090411 pepper, neither crushed nor ground; 090412 pepper, crushed or ground; 090611 cinnamon (Cinnamomum zeylanicum); 090619 cinnamon, other ...
The registry’s caveat on the price anchor:
US Government work (17 U.S.C. 105). The API terms require attribution and prohibit implying Census endorsement; they do not restrict redistribution. Terms: https://www.census.gov/data/developers/about/terms-of-service.html
